In this great little book the modern economy is explained in a fun and simple way by using a story about a ex-finance guy Ulf turned farmer who tries to explain the financial market in 12 days to his neighbour Tim who plans on expanding his business by buying a much bigger farm, but he doesn’t know how to pitch his plan to the bank inorder to get a loan. This is where Ulf comes in and in 12 days by using tools as:
TAU – Trust, Awareness, Understanding
Money’s 4P’s – Protection, Potential, Personal, Privilege
PPACE – product, process, assets, contract, exposure
CHOOK – customer (efterfrågan – product) history (process – finance) opportunity (expansion/start-up – investment), objective (financial plan – future processes), karaktär/character (willpower, cash – attitude)
HenHouse – A model to explain complex financial instruments and the market exposure. The different floors represent different currencies and the ground floor is the local currency. Everything must enter the house via the ground floor. On each floor you have the cash balance and then the further away from the entrance to the floor you get you have future cash-flow. The purpose of the HenHouse is to show the cash-flow and the exposure. It shows your golden eggs!
Ulf helps in moving Tim from unaware to guru!
I learned some new stuff like the Bretton-Woods system established in 1944 that tied the 44 allied countries currencies to the US dollar and the US dollar could then be exchanged at a fixed rate to gold. This system then collapsed in 1971 by the Nixon Chock that terminated convertibility of the US dollar to gold and turned the US dollar in to a fiat currency.
I also added a new book to my read list:
George Soros – The Alchemy of Finance

From goodreads
The HenHouse, textbook at SLU Holding, is innovative, educating and entertaining.
The subject of finance, capital and banking is at the same time a very simple and intuitive one as well as a very complex and intricate one.
Ulf’s approach using a dialogue between an expert in his own field, a farmer, and a finance expert is innovative, educating and entertaining.
The book contribute to a better understanding amongst an important group of entrepreneurs that traditionally have not been the target of financial literature, especially in the expanding area of “green” innovations.
Additionally, they are given useful tools to navigate through the financial world, whether in private capacity or as business leaders.

Read this fantastic book
“As a lawyer, the financial sector has always been a bit scary and to read a book in this genre is not usual for me. However, after listening to the author, something said to me that this is not an ordinary book within the financial field, this is something more.
I started to read and I was impressed. Impressed by the new way of explaining very difficult and complex financial circumstances and impressed by myself being interested in reading more. Ulf is a genius and The HenHouse has made me more interested in the financial field.
I have learned a lot in a very easy way and I strongly recommend all – and particularly all lawyers – to read this fantastic book.

The HenHouse.

This is a great book.
A financial expert helps his neighbor, a chicken farmer, figure out whether he should expand his business and how to go about getting the necessary loans.
The Socratic dialogue style may not be to everyone’s taste, but it works well to take the reader through the various concepts and simplify them in the process. The peculiar thing about finance is that, while one way or another it is relevant to everyone, few have a good grip on it. Even people responsible for finance in companies and, in my case, their own small businesses, don’t get it. As “Ulf” the author and main character points out, there is a mystery at the heart of money which people often turn away from out of fear.
If you’re one of them, you need to read this book and see that what you’re running away from can be understood and mastered to your advantage.

This is the perfect book for me.
This is the perfect book for me as an international business lawyer as well as for my teenagers who aim for a financial profession in the future. The author makes us understand how the global finance works with his phenomenal and pedagogical way of writing and it makes the book very easy to read.
“The Hen House” explains the fundamental factors for financial markets, banking system, currency exchange and hence, helps you to take control of your own finances, your own business or your day-to-day work tasks.
The book is especially useful for us who doesn’t have a financial education on university level and as an introduction for instance teenagers who plan for an education on university level.
